Writing

Ancient people invented writing to keep track of business and administrative things when societies became more advanced. It started off as pictograms, picture-like symbols and moved on to more abstract symbols to represent words, then syllables and individual sounds. Some writing systems, (including today’s) had characters that stand for whole words, syllables or individual sounds too! We have an alphabet, which stands for sounds. Writing like cuneiform stands for whole words (and some syllables), while true alphabets like our Roman alphabet, the Greeks and Phoenicians have icons standing for sounds. Writing is really cool to find, as it tells about people’s lives and culture!
